The Andromeda StrainA & E will be showing a 2-part miniseries of The Andromeda Strain, beginning Memorial Day, May 26. This was one of Michael Crichton's first books, and I really liked it. There was also a movie or TV-movie made in the early 70s, which followed the book fairly closely. From what I've seen, this new version isn't going to follow the book nearly as much, but I'll probably still watch.

I remember liking the original movie. I'll probably give this new version a watch (if I can remember it's on).

Just finished watching (we DVRed it). My biggest problem was that I kept flashing back to the book and the original movie, and there was so much in this one that I don't remember from those ... although admittedly it's been a long time since I've read the book or seen the original movie.
I basically had to force myself to view it as something totally new, and when I did that it was a pretty good movie. Some of it was a little far-fetched ... Daniel Dae Kim at the end crawling into the radioactive pool, severing Rick Schroder's thumb, and then throwing it straight up to Benjamin Bratt, for example. But all in all I liked it. Even when I was comparing it to the book and original movie, I liked how they updated the science and technology -- it's been nearly 40 years, after all.
I liked the cast; they all played their roles really well, except maybe the reporter guy -- something McCormack. That was one of the new characters, and new storylines, and frankly one I could have lived without. I liked the understated reference to Schroder's character being gay, especially since he was generally the "tough guy" of the bunch.
