The MiddlemanJust watched the pilot of this rather odd but intelligent show. It's kind of cheesy, but Torchwood/Buffy cheesy -- it doesn't take itself too seriously. I loved the homages to old comic books and movies, like when Wendy tells a machinegun-toting gorilla to "Get your hands off of me, you damn dirty ape!" ala Charlton Heston in the original Planet of the Apes. Also the guy who sits in the hallway outside Wendy and Lacey's apartment and tosses out song lyrics as greetings. Then there's Ida, a robot (Wendy refers to her at least once as "Rosie" from the Jetsons). I know, it's hard to explain -- you just need to watch it.

Looks interesting. I'll have to give it a watch. I missed the first episode, but it's available on their web site.

Every time I watch I catch something that I missed earlier. Just re-watched episode 2, and noticed that the heir to the Chinese dynasty, Duncan, attends Frank Herbert Jr. High. Wonder if their football team is the Sand Worms.

Oh this show is sooooooo clever. Mousehouse noticed last night (I confess, I missed it) that the alias the Middleman uses at the crime scene -- Dr. Emmett Brown of the Hill Valley Institute -- is a reference to Doc Brown and the town of Hill Valley in Back to the Future. Now I'm going to have to re-watch every episode (not that I'm complaining!) to see if the other aliases the Middleman regularly uses are also pop culture references.

This show is even cleverer than I thought! Was just looking at The Middleman official site at abcfamily.com and discovered that the entire fourth episode was an homage to Back to the Future.
I had noticed that the TV station had an odd, five-letter call sign, but it didn't sink in that KBTTF stood for K-Back to the Future. There were also references to Buford Tannen, Clara Clayton, Twin Pines Mall, a car that runs on garbage, Eastwood Ravine Drive, and more. If you're not watching this show, you're missing something great.

Firefly's Badger, Mark Sheppard, seems to be popping up everywhere. In Monday's episode he played a mysterious billionaire. It looks like this will be at least a recurring character, and I strongly suspect he will end up being a villain. Have I mentioned how much I love this show?

I also got the impression that he was going to be a baddie. Dub Dub may have to go up against her boyfriend.
