I have quite a few old computers that are just taking up space. I was going to throw them all out, but then I thought it would be nice if I could actually make something out of them. I've decided to build a DVR (Digital Video Recorder)- think "Tivo" but without having to pay a monthly fee. Not only would I like to make it a video recorder, but also a media center where I can have all my music, and eventually DVDs, on hard drives. We'll see how it goes. I'll post updates.

So, of course, it goes without saying that the 2nd one you build will go to your favorite brother-in-law!

My DIY PVR project has been put on hiatus. Today I upgraded my Dish receivers. I traded in my two old ones and got one new DVR that not only lets me watch two different shows at the same time, it also allows me to record two shows simultaneously and watch a third recorded program while I'm doing it!

You could do it too! Dish has a program called "Dish it up". It cost $119 for the dual receiver and they came out and installed it and everything. Plus, if you send in the coupon you can print off their site, they give you a $100 credit on your bill so it winds up only costing $19. They also have a single DVR receiver for $100 plus the credit so it doesn't cost you anything!

We got dish network 2 weeks ago, I'm still searching to learn my channels. But of course the 6 year old already knows how to pause live tv to go to the bathroom, so she won't miss her movie! I have DVRed Reaper, Chuck, and meant to use it for Pushing Daiseys, I am going to use it weekly for Chuck because of HIMYM.
When we first had the DISH installed we still had our Comcast cable for an extra few days, and one kids channel that we had to give up was SPROUT, of course the kids are looking for it and it's not on the DISH. But there is really just one 2 hour block of shows they like. So husband set up the old TV (cause we recently bought a flat screen) and ran some cables thru the old comcast unit and managed to record about 5 days worth of those shows.
How spoiled are our kids? Since Comcast only let us have extra channels on one tv and now we have them on all of the Tvs, the kids are almost as spoiled as their parents!
